Can taxing sugar help fight childhood obesity?

A recent report said that 20% of children in NSW are obese. Is taxing sugar the best way forward?

Last week a report was released stating that one in five children in NSW are overweight or obese. In parliament last week, Victorian MP Russell Broadbent said that Australia should tax sugar to combat this increase.

It was immediately dismissed by acting PM Barnaby Joyce, and earned the ire of Senator David Leyonhjelm. But there was once a similar objection to taxes on tobacco.

So is a sugar tax simply a matter of time?
