Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is stepping down as leader of the ruling Liberals after nine years in office but will stay on in his post until the party chooses a replacement.
Mr Trudeau cited rising discontent with his leadership and the abrupt resignation of his finance minister, which exposed internal government turmoil as the reasons behind his resignation.
Mr Trudeau, under heavy pressure from Liberal MPs to quit amid polls indicating the party will be crushed at the next election, says parliament will be suspended until March 24.
He says it's time for a reset.
"Parliament has been entirely seized by obstruction and filibustering and a total lack of productivity over the past few months. We are right now the longest serving minority government in history, and it's time for a reset.”

United States Vice President Kamala Harris has presided over the certification of her defeat to Donald Trump four years after he tried to stop the very process that will now return him to the White House.
Her task was ceremonial seeing her pass copies of each state's election results to lawmakers, and she stood silently with her hands clasped in front of her while they were read out loud.
Afterwards, Ms Harris described the day as significant.
"Well, today was obviously a very important day and it was about what should be the norm and what the American people should be able to take for granted, which is that one of the most important pillars of our democracy is that there will be a peaceful transfer of power. And today I did what I have done my entire career, which is take seriously the oath that I have taken many times to support and defend the Constitution of the United States."
The process was a direct contrast to what took place in the House chamber four years ago when rioters protesting the results of the 2020 election stopped proceedings, forcing people into hiding for several hours.

The Attorney-General is planning to travel to Israel next week as Australia attempts to repair its relationship with the Netanyahu government.
Last month, the Israeli Prime Minister linked a suspected arson attack on a synagogue with Australia's support for a UN resolution demanding Israel end its unlawful presence in the occupied Palestinian territories.
In a post on X, Mr Netanyahu said 'it is impossible to separate this reprehensible act from the extreme anti-Israeli position of the Labor government.'
Mr Dreyfus is one of the strongest supporters of Israel in the federal Labor party.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says its appropriate for the Attorney-General to visit.
"The Foreign Minister has visited Israel already. The Attorney-General is an appropriate person to visit Israel, a range of others have visited Israel in recent times."

"It's about consistency and doing what we've been doing extremely well already this season. Not letting up. Half-way through this season, nothing's done and dusted. We need to keep going, keep doing what's been so great in the first 19 games. And that's what we need to do here. We've got Luton on Saturday which we'd like to take care of and then we can focus on trying to put in a good performance with Liverpool."
