Millions of people in Taiwan are preparing to cast their votes to determine who will lead the country for the next fours.
China has warned voters in Taiwan to make the "right choice" in the days leading up to the vote, having said it believes the self-ruled island should be unified with the mainland, by force if necessary.
While some analysts say the risk of a Chinese military offensive to take over Taiwan is unlikely in the near term, the longer-term horizon is uncertain.
Defence analyst Dr Jyh-Shyang Sheu - from the Institute for National Defense and Security Research - in Taipei spoke with SBS World News Asia Correspondent Aaron Fernandes.
