Greens deputy leader Scott Ludlam has described the government's decision to send a pregnant Somali woman back to the Nauru detention centre where she was raped as "horrific".
Senator Ludlam says Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has to own that decision and there is no way there can be a kinder or gentler spin on that.
"She is now back on the island where she was raped ... we sent her back to Nauru on a RAAF jet, it's horrific," he told Sky News on Sunday.
The 23-year-old asylum seeker, Abyan, was flown to Australia for an abortion but was returned to Nauru on Friday after deciding against having the procedure, the federal government said.
"The information I have is that the woman in question changed her mind about seeking a termination and was deemed fit to fly," the prime minister told reporters in New Zealand on Saturday.
Senator Ludlam said he believed the woman was 14 to 15 weeks pregnant and needed to talk to a counsellor but instead was put on a plane back to Nauru.
Labor's Ed Husic said there had to be more transparency in terms of management of the facility to avoid such situations.
"Once we do have these facilities off our shores, we are accountable for their management. We can't just simply shrug that off," he told Sky News.
