Wildcats coach closing in on third import

Perth Wildcats coach Trevor Gleeson is busy scouting talent at the NBA Summer League and there are a few players who have caught his eye.

Could former San Antonio big man Matt Costello become the Perth Wildcats' newest import?

Wildcats coach Trevor Gleeson is on the lookout for a new mobile centre following the exit of Angus Brandt and he has his eyes on a few players at the current NBA Summer League.

One player who has made a good early impression is the 210cm Costello, who scored 20 points, snared eight rebounds and produced two blocks to lead the Pistons to a 102-84 win over the Pacers.

Costello notched four games for the San Antonio Spurs during the 2017/18 NBA season and a strong NBL season could catapult him back into the NBA mix.

Donta Hall, who stands at 205cm, is another option for Gleeson.

Hall scored 11 points and pulled down six rebounds for the Pistons in the same match that Costello dominated.

"He (Hall) is someone that we'll look at definitely," Gleeson told the NBL's Summer League Overtime.

"I also liked Costello out there. Just doing the hard work and really strong. That's the kind of player that we want. Can we get them? I don't know."

Gleeson said he was reluctant to recruit an import taller than 213cm.

"I've found the seven footers haven't done well in our league besides Andrew Bogut," Gleeson said.

"We're really looking for a great screener and someone who can crash the glass."

Perth's title defence received a huge boost last week when grand final MVP Terrico White re-signed.

The Wildcats also snared former Melbourne United and Breakers big man Majok Majok.

White, Bryce Cotton, Damian Martin, Nick Kay and Mitch Norton will form the nucleus of a Wildcats squad attempting to go back-to-back.

Gleeson is part of the Indiana Pacers' coaching staff at the 2019 NBA Summer League.

He is keen to use the experience as both a scouting and learning tool.

"It's been really good," Gleeson said.

"It's just finding out about the latest trends in the NBA and what they're coaching and certain aspects defensively - how they go about it.

"I'm getting a lot of ideas to bring over and hopefully that will help our team get better."
