Who is Yung Filly, the British YouTuber charged with rape in Australia?

YouTuber Andres Barrientos, who goes by the name Yung Filly, has been granted bail but with strict conditions.

A British YouTuber and musician is facing an allegation of rape in Australia.

The social media personality who goes by the name Yung Filly faced a Perth court on Thursday, accused of raping and choking a woman in a Perth hotel room.

Why was Yung Filly in Australia?

Filly, whose real name is Andres Felipe Valencia Barrientos, was taken into custody in Brisbane on Tuesday and extradited to Perth on Wednesday.

It is understood he performed in Perth on 28 September, before doing shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Gold Coast.

What is Yung Filly known for?

Barrientos was born in Columbia and moved to the United Kingdom with his parents when he was about two years old.

He has previously spoken about the "struggles" of growing up "poor".

Barrientos started doing comedy skits on YouTube in 2013 and over the years has teamed up with a number of well-known creators on different projects.

The 29-year-old now has more than 3 million followers on Instagram and almost 2 million on YouTube.

In 2017, he also began a music career, releasing rap songs, and in 2021, he won a MOBO Award for best media personality. These awards recognise British people making "music of black origin".

Barrientos has also appeared on numerous television shows, including BBC's Hot Property, and has worked with some major brands, including McDonald's.

What are the charges?

He faced Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday, accused of sexually assaulting a woman in her 20s following his Perth show.

Barrientos is facing a slew of charges.

These include four counts of sexual penetration without consent and three counts of assault occasioning bodily harm.

He is also accused of impeding the woman's breathing or circulation by applying pressure to her neck.

UK YouTuber cannot leave Australia

While prosecutors opposed bail, it was granted with strict conditions, including that Barrientos surrender his passport, supply a $100,000 security and report to police seven days a week.

He was also banned from commenting online about the charges or his accuser or from coming within 500 metres of two people identified by their initials in the court.

Barrientos is not allowed to post about the charges online, and his X account appears to have been removed from the platform, with old mentions linking to a post with a notice that says: "In some instances, this is because the behavior violates the X Rules. Other times, it may be in response to a valid and properly scoped request from an authorized entity in a given country."

Barrientos is expected to face court in Perth again at a later date.
