The 2019 federal election campaign has been an ugly one, marred by incidents of , and several acts of .

And on election day, the ugliness showed no sign of stopping.

It started late on election eve when an irate man assaulted a .

The 62-year-old man was arrested and charged with two counts of common assault.

On Saturday morning, Labor candidate for Deakin Shireen Morris tweeted that a number of posters were vandalised to depict her wearing a niqab.

"Using Islamophobia to try and secure votes ... disgraceful," she wrote.

Several other social media users tweeted more posters of Ms Morris which were similarly defaced.

In the seat of Chisholm, Labor accused the Liberal Party of making a "fake" Australian Electoral Commission poster which encouraged Chinese-speaking voters to preference the Liberals.

The poster, written in Mandarin, uses colours very similar to AEC material.

"Correct way to vote. On the green voting card, put preference 1 next to the Liberal Party. The other boxes can be numbered from smallest to highest," it reads.

and roughly 20 per cent of voters there have Chinese ancestry.

A spokesperson for the Labor Party told SBS News it had lodged an official complaint with the AEC.

"This is a new low - a pathetic and dirty attempt to deceive voters because the Liberals have no policy to talk about," the spokesperson said.

In a tweet, the AEC said "while the AEC uses purple in our signs - the AEC can't prohibit others doing so".

In in the seat of Cowper, the Nationals have accused Independent Rob Oakeshott's team of "criminal damage".

"This morning we caught an official from the Oakeshott campaign tearing down signage at William Bayldon Public School in Toormina," NSW Nationals state director Ross Cadell said.

"Several signs were ripped down before the official was challenged. The incident has now been reported to the police along with photos and videos of the man's actions."

Meanwhile, photos from Mr Abbott's seat of Warringah show Hitler moustaches have been added to a number of his posters.

SBS News has contacted the Liberal Party about this latest act of vandalism for comment.
