Victorian water corps turn to solar energy

Victorian water corporations have formed a group to secure cheaper renewable energy in a bid to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

More than a dozen Victorian water bodies have formed an Australian-first group to buy cheaper clean solar energy to slash carbon emissions.

The 13 water corporations formed Zero Emissions Water Ltd to buy 20 to 50 per cent of their total energy needs from regional Victoria's Kiamal Solar Farm, forecasting to cut 80,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

By combining buying power the group managed to get energy at a cheaper rate than they would have individually, making the conversion cheaper for customers.
