Malcolm Turnbull says the federal government and Australian Defence Force are working closely with Queensland ahead of Cyclone Debbie crossing the coast.

"For those in the path of Cyclone Debbie, please take care and stay safe," Mr Turnbull told reporters in Canberra on Monday after talking to Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.

"If you have received an official evacuation order, you and your family must leave immediately."

Mr Turnbull told parliament the navy landing ship dock HMAS Choules had been positioned to assist in the cyclone response.

He noted Queensland police had confirmed strong winds had contributed to a car crash that claimed the life of a tourist near Proserpine on Monday morning.

"Our message to the people of the region facing the cyclone is please heed advice," Mr Turnbull said.

He paid tribute to emergency services personnel and volunteers ahead of the cyclone.

"Time and time again, Australians show grace under pressure, bravery in the face of danger, and rally without a second thought to help each other," Mr Turnbull said.

"These virtues will be on display over the next few days where Australians face the worst that nature can throw at us."

Labor leader Bill Shorten said Queenslanders were "practical people" who were familiar with natural disasters.

"Most of all, look after each other and stay safe," he said.
