Turnbull passes final poll hurdle

The prime minister will be able to seek an election writ from the governor-general as early as Tuesday, after the parliament passed three supply bills.

Malcolm Turnbull can call an election, after parliament passed legislation to fund the government through to December.

The Senate ticked off Mr Turnbull's final hurdle on Tuesday, passing three budget supply bills and paving the way for his visit to the governor-general to seek election writs.

The prime minister will need to convince the governor-general he can guarantee supply before he can seek a double-dissolution election for July 2.
