Throughout , demonstrators, onlookers and the media have captured police violence on video.
SBS News looks at some of these incidents and how authorities have reacted.
In Buffalo, New York, video taken by a reporter from a local public radio station on Friday showed police pushing a 75-year-old protester to the ground.
The man was left bleeding on the pavement as officers walked by.
Two officers have since been suspended without pay and an investigation is underway.
"I was deeply disturbed by the video," Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said in a statement.
"After days of peaceful protests and several meetings between myself, police leadership and members of the community, tonight's event is disheartening."
The victim is in a stable but serious condition in hospital.
Indianapolis police are also investigating the actions of officers after a video captured them violently arresting two women on Sunday.
In the video, several officers can be seen using batons against a woman before pepper balls are fired. Another woman is then pushed over by an officer.
It is unclear what happened before the video starts.
Indianapolis police confirmed to local media an investigation had commenced but did not provide further comment.
In Texas, the family of a 20-year-old African-American student told local media he suffered a fractured skull and brain damage after police shot him in the head with what they called "less-lethal" rounds on Sunday.
Police said they meant to shoot at another individual at the protest who was throwing objects at them.
Video shows police continuing to shoot as people carry the student's body away.
"We are praying for this young man and his family and hoping that his condition improves quickly," Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said.
Meanwhile in Denver, police on Thursday said an investigation was underway after video showed officers firing pepper balls at a man and his pregnant girlfriend.
In the video, the man stops his car near police at an intersection and yells at them, as stray pepper balls had hit his car.
He says that his pregnant girlfriend is in the passenger seat before delivering a series of expletives.
Police react by shooing pepper balls directly at the pair before they drive away.
On Sunday, video of two police vehicles in New York City moving into protesters was shared online, receiving more than 30 million views on Twitter.
In the fallout, Mayor Bill de Blasio defended the actions of police.
"[The situation was] created by a group of protesters blocking and surrounding a police vehicle, a tactic that we had seen before in the last few days, a tactic that can be very, very dangerous to everyone involved," he said.
"And we've seen direct attacks on police officers, including in their vehicles."
The New York City Police Department has since opened an investigation.
