A man has been arrested by counter-terrorism police at Sydney Airport off a flight from London and charged with making threats related to New Year's Eve.

The 40-year-old was arrested by NSW Police Terrorism Investigation Squad officers on Thursday on the basis of information from the public.

Search warrants were executed at a residence in Chippendale in inner Sydney and at an inner western Sydney storage facility where items including documents and hard drives were seized.

Police said the man was charged over documents containing threats contrary to the Crimes Act concerning online blogs and was refused bail prior to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Friday.

Deputy Commissioner, Specialist Operations, Catherine Burn, said in a statement that police took all threats seriously and investigations so far indicated the matter was an isolated incident.

"As a consequence, we are confident that there are no current or specific threats to New Year's Eve and, while we ask people to remain vigilant, people should enjoy the celebrations," she said.
