On Monday morning, history will be made at the NFL Super Bowl LIII - but not only on the field.

On the sidelines, two Los Angeles Rams cheerleaders will be particularly excited as they step out for their first ever Super Bowl performance.

Napoleon Jinnies and Quinton Peron became the first ever male cheerleaders in the NFL in March 2018. Almost a year later, they will make history again as the first male cheerleaders to perform during America's most-watched event.

"Who would have thought ten months ago that this would have been a possibility," Mr Peron said, ahead of the game.

"Don't be afraid to live your truth and be daring."

The pair were among 300 people who auditioned to be a Rams cheerleader last year.

"They're such phenomenal dancers, once people see them dance and perform it changes their mind about what they thought it would be,'' Keely Fimbres, the Rams' director of cheerleaders and mascot, told the Los Angeles Times. "Everything just flows.''

While male cheerleaders are relatively common in high school and college teams, up until now they have been largely missing from professional squads.

Some men perform with cheerleaders as 'stunt performers', but both Mr Peron and Mr Jinnies are there to dance.

Steven Leslie, a LA Rams fan, told Radio 1 that the two men were "very popular".

"The two guys are great. They've been brilliant all season.

"There's been no backlash or anything silly like that, it's just been embraced. It has to happen, it's 2019 now."

In Australia, the match, between the New England Patriots and LA Rams, will kick off at 10.30am.

"It's kinda like living out a dream that we didn't expect to have," Mr Jinnies said.
