Kevin Spacey has denied reports he was paid $A8.54 million ($US8 million) to pose for a 'selfie' photograph with Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto.
The House of Cards star shared a photo of the pair at an event in Cancun last week, writing, "1 President is real. W/Pres Nieto in #Mexico. Good meeting a man also making progress in his 1st year in office."
However, the pair faced a backlash from Mexican citizens after it was reported that Spacey had been paid to attend a convention by bosses at the Mexican tourism board and have his picture taken with the politician.
"How much did the selfie of Pena Nieto with Kevin Spacey cost?" asked the news portal sinembargo.mx in a headline about the photo.
Forbes blogger Dolia Estevez said the head of the tourism board, Rodolfo Lopez Negrete, denied in an email to her a news report that Spacey had been paid $US8 million ($A8.66 million) to attend the event, declaring the sum "wrong and without a source."
However Spacey has also taken to Twitter to deny the claims.
