Abdallah Al Shahani performed a popular dance move known as 'dabbing' at a music festival in Taif city in the southwest of Saudi Arabia before he was arrested last week.
The dance move, which celebrities and the public alike have embraced over the past year, involves pointing one arm towards the sky and dropping the head into the other bent arm.
Prince Sverre Magnus of Norway, former US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and American footballer Cam Watson are among those who have tried their hand at it.
But in conservative Saudi Arabia, the move has been outlawed by the National Committee for Drug Control, because it is believed to be associated with narcotics.
Abdul-Ella Al-Sharif, the secretary-general of the National Committee for Drug Control, told local publication that the celebrity's dance move was "contrary to the national strategy to combat drugs."
He added the star was arrested the same as anyone who "incites or advocates for abuse of drugs."
The committee issued a public notice about the ban on Twitter.
The artist took to the social media platform to apologise to the government for making the dance move.
The dance move first began gaining popularity when a song '' by US hip hop group Migos went viral, but it is believed to have been introduced by rapper in Atlanta, the US.
Music journalist told UK's 'Glamour Magazine', "While a lot of folks really credit Migos for creating the move with their song 'Look At My Dab', it was actually rapper Skippa Da Flippa [who hails from Atlanta] who came up with it first.”
