Three Queensland teenagers have been charged after allegedly threatening schools in Brisbane and the Gold Coast in separate incidents.

Police on Tuesday charged a teenage boy over the alleged posting of a threat warning of a mass shooting at a school in the Moreton Bay suburb of North Lakes on a social media platform on Monday.

Two other teenage boys were also charged on Wednesday in relation to the emailing a threat to the AB Patterson College on the Gold Coast on Tuesday.

Police allege the North Lakes threat used similar wording to a post published on online bulletin board 4chan over the weekend, which warned students in the North Lakes area to stay home and made reference to the recent shooting that killed 17 people at a school in Parkland, Florida.

The alleged offender has been charged with one count of using a carriage service to make a threat to cause serious harm and threatening violence and will be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act, police say.

On the Gold Coast, one boy has been charged with using a carriage service to make a threat, harass or cause offence while the second boy was charged with threatening violence.

Acting Chief Superintendent Chris Stream says the teens are facing serious criminal charges with significant penalties.

"The Queensland Police Service will continue to assess any threats to public safety and I would urge anyone with information to contact police," he said.

In an unrelated incident, the Lakes College north of Brisbane was forced into lock down on Tuesday afternoon for about two hours from 4pm after receiving a bomb threat via email.

Police failed to find anything sinister during a search of the campus.

Schools remain open on Wednesday.
