Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's leaked impersonation of US President Donald Trump was well received by American officials, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says.

Video and audio that was leaked following the annual Midwinter Ball in Canberra on Wednesday shows Mr Turnbull impersonating Mr Trump in front of an amused audience made up of journalists, parliamentary colleagues and foreign officials.

He can be seen and heard making fun of Mr Trump's signature hand gestures and speaking manner, making light of his poor polling and alleged campaign ties to Russia.

His remarks were widely reported in the Australian and international press and come after what have been reportedly tense discussions between the two world leaders.

"It was very light-hearted, it was very entertaining and I know it was taken in the spirit to which it was intended," Ms Bishop said in Brisbane on Friday.

"There were high-ranking American officials at the Midwinter Ball and to my observation they were laughing as heartily as we were; they found it very amusing."
