Australian actress and DJ Ruby Rose says she is in shock from the shooting massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, that left 50 people dead.

US authorities said Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old security guard, also wounded another 53 people in the early hours of Sunday at the Pulse nightclub.

It was the worst mass shooting in US history.

Rose said she performed at another Orlando club just days ago.

"There is nothing I can do today but cry and pray as I lay in shock after waking to the horrible senseless crime in Orlando," Rose wrote on Twitter.

"I was in Orlando Friday and played to a beautiful mostly LGBT crowd and I never once imagined reading this days after."

Authorities are also on high alert in Los Angeles where a man, who allegedly said he was going to attend West Hollywood's LA Pride festival, was arrested with a cache of weapons and an ingredient used to make pipe bombs.

Rose also played at LA Pride on Saturday night and said, "All I see is LOVE, DANCING, FREEDOM, HAPPINESS from the DJ booth".
