A Victorian woman was forced to elbow a man in the face to escape after she was sexually assaulted in a mosh pit at an outdoor dance festival in St Kilda.

Sexual Crimes Squad detectives said a man began dancing behind the woman at the Listen Out festival, before grabbing her around the waist and pulling her towards him about 8pm on Saturday.

As she tried to move away, the man grabbed the victim around the neck and placed his hand inside her clothing and sexually assaulted her.

The woman managed to elbow the male in his face and left the mosh pit area, where she found her friends and called police.
Detectives, who released a facial composite image of the attacker, described him as Caucasian with ginger-coloured hair.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
