Police have pleaded with Kurnell residents to avoid sifting through the wreckage of homes and businesses as the risks of asbestos exposure are assessed.

Thunderstorms and a tornado lashed southern and eastern Sydney on Wednesday morning, leaving a trail of debris in its wake.

Sutherland Shire has hired contractors to pick up stray asbestos pieces, while NSW Police said an assessment of the asbestos risk would be made by experts on Thursday.

Buildings constructed before 1987 are said to be especially dangerous.

"We have experts that will examine the area to identify debris that may contain asbestos and coordinate its removal," said Assistant Commissioner Michael Fuller.

"We have also commenced air quality testing as an additional measure to ensure the highest level of public safety."

Commissioner Fuller said residents returning to their homes after the storm should also wear a dust mask and protective clothing as a precaution.

A community meeting will be held at midday at the Marton Community Hall on Captain Cook Drive for those seeking further information.

STAYING SAFE:

* Ensure property is given the green light by an Asbestos Assessor

* Do not enter the area unless absolutely necessary

* Wear a dust mask and protective clothing where asbestos may be disturbed

* Keep asbestos debris damp until removed by experts.
