Las Vegas tunnel dwellers voting for Trump

SBS World News Radio: Among those following the election are Americans who would probably never be screened by a pollster.

They live in a labyrinth of underground stormwater drains under glamorous Las Vegas that have become home to nearly 1,000 people fighting poverty and drug and gambling addictions.

They may be downtrodden, but they plan to vote.

Just below the gaudy, neon-lit world of the Las Vegas Strip is a subterranean community most visitors to Vegas would never see.

It was discovered in 2002 by journalist Matthew O'Brien.

"I'd heard about a murderer who had used the underground flood channels to evade the police. I was not expecting to find people living down here on a permanent basis. That was a big shock to me."

About a thousand people live in the stormwater drains under the city, including a man known only as John who came to Las Vegas from Orlando, Florida.

He says he works the night shift at one of the city's convenience stores and has not had a day off since April.

Living in the drains allows him to take life one day at a time and not be tied down by having to worry about paying rent or a mortgage.

He says millions of Americans like him are doing it tough, and he suggests his fellow drain dwellers are likely to vote Republican.

"I think that most of them would vote for Trump. They want to see change. We don't even know how far we are in debt, you know? It's so bad now, we'll never know. We won't live long for them to even figure it out. 48 million Americans are on food stamps ... 48 million."

Another man living under the streets of Las Vegas is a truck driver originally from the state of Indiana named Kraig.

He says he started taking drugs after the sudden death of his wife.

He says he steals two things every day: a chicken sandwich and a newspaper that enables him to follow the election campaign.

He says neither Donald Trump nor Hillary Clinton appeals to him.

"Who'll I vote for? Boy, I don't know, because I can't believe, out of 300 million people, those are the only two qualified. I can't go with Hillary. She's a crook. A crook and a thief. I'll go to the polls and vote for Donald."

While the tunnels provide those without conventional shelter a form of refuge, the reality of the lives this group of Americans confronts can be particularly grim.

The entertainment capital of the world lies in the wider Las Vegas Valley, and some parts of the city are particularly flood-prone.

In June, a man calling himself Jazz and his girlfriend Sharon were caught unaware.

"We were sleeping, actually, and about a foot of water hit us. We were laying on the ground so, you know, we wake up to that. So we're running around here like a bunch of chickens trying to pick up everything. A third wave came, and it was up to my chest, and it just took her away."

He managed to catch up to her as they were swept through the system at more than 40 kilometres per hour.

They slammed into a debris guard at the end of the channel, but she became trapped under an overturned shopping trolley, and it ultimately caused her death.
