Keith Urban won so many American Music Awards his wife Nicole Kidman was called on to help him carry them.

The Australian artist was first announced as the winner of the favourite male artist gong on Sunday at the Microsoft Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.

When he appeared on stage it was revealed he was also the winner of the favourite album award for Ripcord and favourite song for Blue Ain't Your Color.

Unable to hold all three awards and give his acceptance speech, two were handed to Kidman who, sitting in the front row, raised them in the air and kissed one.

Urban dedicated his wins to Kidman and their daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret, who he affectionately referred to by their nicknames.

"Thank you girl," Urban said, looking down at Kidman.

"I share these with you tonight and our girls Munchkin and Fifi watching at home.

"I love you girls so much.

"Thank you for all of the love in our home and in my heart."

The Australian A-List duo have been cleaning up at US award ceremonies in 2017 and are expected to continue into the new year during Hollywood awards season and the Grammys.

Just two months ago Kidman stood inside the Microsoft Theatre with two Emmys for starring and producing the hit TV mini-series, Big Little Lies, and she is the hot favourite to repeat at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremonies in January.

The Grammy nominations will be announced next week.

The American Music Awards are billed as the world's biggest fan-voted award show.

Bruno Mars was the big winner at the AMAs with the artist of the year award, beating fellow nominees The Chainsmokers, Drake, Kendrick Lamar and Ed Sheeran.

Lady Gaga took favourite pop/rock female artist, Niall Horan won new artist, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee claimed collaboration of the year and Imagine Dragons for favourite pop/rock duo or group.

Linkin Park dedicated their alternative rock artist award win to late frontman Chester Bennington.
