Nigerian woman Lola Ogunyemi was initially excited to be the face for Dove's new body wash campaign.

However, images for the Facebook advertisement caused a social media frenzy when she was pictured removing her t-shirt only for a white woman to appear.

The commercial was deemed 'racially insensitive' by many on social media, and the backlash forced Dove to remove the images and issue an apology, claiming it had 'missed the mark' when representing women of colour.
Ms Ogunyemi, who was born in London, responded on Wednesday by saying she felt that the outrage over the short snapshot of the ad was "initially justified" as the viewer may have lacked context, but felt the images were "misinterpreted".

"I had been excited to be a part of the commercial and promote the strength and beauty of my race, so for it to be met with widespread outrage was upsetting," she wrote in .

"If I had even the slightest inclination that I would be portrayed as inferior, or as the 'before' in a before-and-after shot, I would have been the first to say an emphatic 'no'."

Ms Ogunyemi said she had a positive experience with the Dove team and loved the 13-second and 30-second versions of the ad.

The model felt it successfully portrayed seven woman of different race and age, all answering the same question about their skin.

She felt proud to be the face of the beauty campaign and to represent "Black Girl Magic'.

"I am not just some silent victim of a mistaken beauty campaign. I am strong, I am beautiful, and I will not be erased," she wrote.

The ad came to the attention of social media when popular makeup artist Naythemua quickly turned to Facebook and asked her followers about the message.

"So I'm scrolling through Facebook and this is the  ad that comes up.... ok so what am I looking at," she wrote on Friday.
Dove published a statement last week apologising for the Facebook ad.

"As a part of a campaign for Dove body wash, a 3-second video clip was posted to the US Facebook page. This did not represent the diversity of real beauty which is something Dove is passionate about and is core to our beliefs, and it should not have happened. We have removed the post and have not published any other related content," a statement to SBS News said.

"We apologise deeply and sincerely for the offence that it has caused and do not condone any activity or imagery that insults any audience.”
