On 31 December each year, millions of Australians flock to capital city centres to ring in the new year and enjoy the fireworks and other entertainment.
Others head to the beach, out camping, or to summer festivals.
But with extreme heat predicted for some parts of the country and storms in others, the weather could put a damper on celebrations.
Here's the forecast for each capital city.
Darwin
Many parts of the Northern Territory are facing uncomfortably high temperatures over the coming days.
"In the Northern Territory, low to severe-intensity heatwave conditions cover most areas," the Bureau of Meteorology said in a statement.
"Locally, extreme heatwave levels are forecast around Darwin where warm minimums are leading to uncomfortable nights."
In the capital city, New Year's Eve is set to be warm, with a minimum temperature of 27C and a maximum of 35.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology forecast, Darwin city and the outer Darwin area will be partly cloudy with a medium chance of showers and a possible storm.
Brisbane
Over the past week, parts of Brisbane and surrounding areas have been hit with storms and heavy rain, and this could continue on New Year's Eve.
While parts of the state are experiencing heatwave conditions, the BoM says showers and possibly thunderstorms are likely to return for the weekend.
The New Year's Eve forecast says Brisbane will be partly cloudy with an 80 per cent chance of rainfall.
Temperatures are set to be between 22 and 30C.
Sydney
According to the BoM, northeast NSW will bear the brunt of rain in the state, with isolated and possibly severe thunderstorms into Sunday.
There is also a chance of severe thunderstorms in Sydney, the Blue Mountains and the Hunter regions.
In Sydney, New Year's Eve is likely to be cloudy, with the temperature at a minimum of 19C and a maximum of 24.

Canberra
In Australia's capital city, New Year's Eve is forecast to be cloudy, with a slight chance of a shower.
The BoM is predicting a minimum temperature of 11C and a maximum of 22.
Melbourne
In Melbourne, which over the past week, it is not expected to rain on New Year's Eve.
The day is set to be cloudy with southerly winds and the temperature will likely be mild, ranging from 13 to 21C.
Hobart
New Year's Eve in Hobart is set to be partly cloudy, but rain is unlikely.
The temperature is forecast to be between 10 and 23C, with west to northwesterly winds.
Adelaide
In South Australia, there is a chance of isolated gusty thunderstorms over the western part of the state.
In Adelaide, New Year's Eve is forecast to be sunny, with light winds and a low chance of rain.
Temperatures are forecast to be a minimum of 12C and a maximum of 26.
Perth
In Western Australia, parts of the state are experiencing heatwave conditions.
Marble Bar in WA's Pilbara region may reach 49C on Saturday, and temperatures up to 45C are expected there for the next six days.
For those in Perth, New Year's Eve will be mostly sunny, with temperatures ranging from a minimum of 19C to a maximum of 30.
