Counter-terrorism police have been called in to track stalkers and the source of a homophobic email about independent MP Dr Kerryn Phelps, which also names her children.

Dr Phelps, the federal member for the NSW seat of Wentworth, has received a series of abusive emails since she won former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull's seat in a by-election last year.

She took her concerns to her local police station and now the NSW Police Counter Terrorism Command has offered its analysts.

"I was forwarded two particularly horrendous emails this week - one of which referred to my three children by name," she told AAP.

"Jacqui (her partner) and I have also been followed on foot and by car in recent times.

As well as attacking her sexuality, the emails falsely say she has withdrawn from the campaign, was not eligible to run for parliament and was in jail.

Dr Phelps said she had been frustrated by the lack of a conclusion from an Australian Federal Police investigation.

"I'm very concerned for the other members of my family, several of whom are highly upset by all of this," she said.

"It is also deeply troubling that someone or a group of people are trying to influence the outcome of the election. Australia should be better than this. Our democracy is too important."
