The City of Perth has withdrawn hundreds of parking fines it issued during an Anzac Day dawn service after facing a barrage of criticism.
The city fined a number of drivers who parked illegally during the service at Kings Park but faced backlash when the news broke.
President of the Returned and Services League of Australia WA (RSLWA) Peter Aspinall told the ABC that the issuing of the tickets was disgraceful.
"The parking opportunities around Kings Park were obviously quite difficult and to think at four o'clock in the morning people are going to be penalised, on such a day, quite frankly I think is disgraceful," he said.
In a statement to SBS News, the City of Perth confirmed that it had backed down.
"The City of Perth will withdraw parking infringements issued to motorists parked illegally in tow-away zones, during this morning's Anzac Day dawn service.
"It is important to note several thousand motorists were not fined for illegal parking on verges and footpaths and only those in the exclusion zones were fined as a matter of safety given the traffic management plans.
"However, given the circumstances fines issued will not be enforced."
The statement said the city will work with event organisers to ensure better traffic management in the future.
