US officials said eight people died and eleven others were seriously injured in the first deadly attack on the city since the September 11, 2001 Al-Qaeda hijackings.

Argentina's foreign ministry has confirmed at least five citizens celebrating the 30th anniversary of their high school graduation died during the attack.

The ministry named Hernan Mendoza, Diego Angelini, Alejandro Pagnucco, Ariel Erlij and Hernan Ferruchi as five victims of the Manhattan vehicle attack.
“The compatriots, from the city of Rosario, were part of a group of friends celebrating the 30th anniversary of their graduation from the Polytechnic School of that city when the tragic event occurred," a statement read.

“The Consulate General continues working in permanent contact with the police authorities and the hospital that received the affected, as well as with the relatives in Argentina.

“We accompany the families in this terrible moment of deep pain, which all Argentines share.”

A sixth victim, Martin Ludovico Marro, was rushed to hospital after the attack and is recovering from his injuries.
A Belgian national was also among the people killed when a pickup driver mowed down pedestrians and cyclists in New York on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Didier Reynders said.

"I am deeply saddened to announce a Belgian victim in Manhattan - I express my condolences to the family and friends," Reynders said on Twitter.

"My thoughts are with the victims of the attack in New York," he said, without giving further details about the victim.

The minister also confirmed another three more Belgian citizens were injured in hospital.

The truck driver struck just blocks from the 9/11 Memorial, on the West Side of Lower Manhattan, and close to schools and a park at 3:05pm (1905 GMT) as children and their parents geared up to celebrate Halloween.

President Donald Trump, who has curbed the number of migrants entering the United States, swiftly declared that the US "must not" allow Islamic State jihadists to "return, or enter, our country after defeating them" overseas.
