Despite Australia's multicultural mix, we're falling well behind the world when it comes to learning a second language.

While 20 per cent of Australians speak a language other than English, only 13 per cent study a language at HSC level - that compares to 99 per cent in the Netherlands.

Latest neurological studies show a second language is one of the best forms of brain-training available.

And experts are now calling for bilingual programs for preschoolers.
