Aussie drivers will be among the first in the world to order the new electric Tesla car but will also be holding out the longest to have it parked in their garage.

The global launch of the new Model 3 Tesla kicks off on March 31, meaning Australians will be able to queue up at their closest Tesla dealership and reserve the car for a $1,500 deposit several hours before their US counterparts.

But with the car's production scheduled for late 2017 and delivery of right-hand drives even further after that, it could be a while before you see the Model 3 cruising Australian roads.

Marketed as the first "affordable Tesla", the car's price tag in the US has been set at around $US35,000 ($A46,149.79).

However Australian drivers are expected to have to fork out closer to $60,000.
