The wait for Prince Harry's engagement to American actress Meghan Markle is finally over, so let the guessing game begin on which Aussies will receive an invitation.
In keeping with royal protocol, Harry is likely to invite Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and wife Lucy as well as Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove and wife Lady Cosgrove to the wedding that's being planned for early 2018.
But the 33-year-old prince also has plenty of Aussie mates to consider sending an invitation.
Harry has links with Australians from all walks of life, from celebrities to soldiers he trained alongside in Perth and Darwin during the final weeks of his 10-year stint as an officer in the British Army in 2015.
Juliet Rieden, The Australian Women's Weekly editor and author of The Royals in Australia, says if Harry and Ms Markle choose a public wedding, Aussies likely to make the guest list include the governor-general, state governors and a mix of celebrities and friends the prince has made during his visits here.
"I imagine there will be a little bit of a contingent from the defence force because he was embedded with them for a month and I'm sure there were people he made friends with that he would like to invite to his wedding," Ms Rieden told AAP on Tuesday.
The long-time royal watcher is also tipping pop princess Kylie, who has known Harry and his family for several years, as someone who might score an invitation along with Aussie author Kathy Lette and Kiwi comedian-turned-psychologist Lady Pamela Stevenson, both of whom are friends of Harry's father Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwell.
"They're all part of the gumleaf brigade in London," Ms Rieden said.
Harry also has strong ties with local organisers of the Invictus Games, the global sports event for wounded veterans that will be hosted by Sydney next October.
Harry flew to Sydney in June this year to meet with the organisers and spend time with Australian veterans who were training to compete in the 2017 games in Toronto.
Royal fans will be hoping Harry brings his new bride to Sydney after the pair made their public debut as a couple at the Toronto games in September.
Harry has always managed to attract huge crowds on his visits to Australia, which he visited for the first time as a 19 year old when he worked on the Tooloombilla cattle station in southern Queensland for three months.
The property at the time was owned by Annie and Noel Hill who were friend's of Harry's mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, and was organised as part of the prince's gap year after he graduated from Eton.
While details of Harry and Ms Markle's wedding have yet to be revealed, potential guests could look to the past for inspiration in terms of what gifts to take if they are invited.
Australia's official gift to Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer when they married in spectacular style at St Paul's Cathedral in 1981 was a set of 20 handcrafted silver octagonal platters, each inscribed on the back with their wedding date.
The platters were presented in a French-polished box made from Australian blackwood.
William and Kate took a more modern approach and asked guests to make a donation to one of 26 of their favourite charities in lieu of a gift, with Australia donating $25,000 to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
