Aussies choose Wills over Charles as king

A poll released to mark the Queen's 90th birthday shows more Australians would prefer Prince William, not his father, as our next king.

Australians appear happy to keep the Queen on the throne but twice as many people prefer Prince William over his father when it comes to our next king.

In a poll released ahead of the Queen's 90th birthday next week, only a quarter of Australians want to see Prince Charles as our next monarch, compared to 49 per cent backing his 33-year-old son.

Just 35 per cent of those surveyed for the May issue of The Australian Women's Weekly said they want Australia to become a republic, with about a quarter undecided.

"From our survey, the Queen's popularity is certainly in no doubt," the magazine's acting editor-in-chief Juliet Rieden said.

"The results are rough on Charles, who has a deep-seated personal relationship with Australia, but his image has never fully recovered from the tragic death of Diana."

Prince Charles last visited Australia in 2015 with his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

The six-day tour appeared to go off without a hitch, with hundreds of people turning up to see the royal couple as they toured Canberra, Perth, Sydney and Adelaide.

But the fanfare was much more muted than when Charles toured Australia with Diana in the early 1980s, let alone the huge reception Prince William and his wife Catherine received on their visit with baby son Prince George in 2014.

The poll found that even two-year-old Prince George was more popular than Prince Charles among Australians when it comes to who our next king will be.

Of those who said they didn't want Prince Charles to become king, nearly half said they believed it was time for Australia to cut ties with the monarchy once the Queen dies.

Nearly a third said they didn't want Camilla becoming Queen.

However, King Charles supporters said they believed he would do a great job and acknowledged his special relationship with Australia.

The Queen will celebrate her 90th birthday with her family on April 21 at Windsor Castle, west of London.
