Imam Nazeer ul Hassan Thanvi shares his views with SBS Urdu on the spirit of fasting during Ramadan.

Imam Nazeer ul Hassan Thanvi told SBS Urdu that "The soul of Ramadan consists of patience, looking after each other and simplicity."

"It’s unfortunate we are forgetting the real essence of fasting and are just focusing on the physical actions that a fast requires such as not eating or drinking."

A lot of lavish iftar parties are publicly and privately held throughout the month where people gather to open their fast and pray.

Due to the size and over-the-top style of iftars, a lot of food gets wasted.

Imam Thanvi reinforces the message of not to waste food and said that “The prophet did ask to hold iftars for families/friends but never mentioned that they should be extravagant.”

“Rather you can offer someone a date or a sip of milk to open the iftar, which clearly points towards the essence of Ramadan which is simplicity.”
