"People say I was in the wrong place at the right time, but anybody in my position would have, and should have, done the same."

A Pakistani doctor is being hailed a hero after he saved life of a shooting victim and attended a cop.

Dr Attique Zafar went to see a patient as part of a routine home-visit at around 10pm at Logan Road, Holland Park in Brisbane, only to find out that a person in a nearby unit block had been shot and needed immediate medical attention.

The shooter was still around, posing a threat to Dr Zafar’s life, but that did not discourage him from discharging his professional duties.

“I was not thinking about anything else, and my complete attention was on the patient,” he tells .

While attending the patient, Dr Zafar sent for an ambulance and was later escorted out of the danger zone by SWAT officers.

The SWAT team arrested the shooter, but an officer got injured in the process.

“They took me out of the danger zone where I first attended the shooting victim, and later treated the SWAT officer who had dislocated his shoulder during the operation,” Dr Zafar explains the scene.

Originally from Lahore, Dr Zafar came to Australia in 2009, and has worked in the Northern Territory, South Australia and Queensland.

He believes he didn’t do anything extraordinary.

“People say I was in the wrong place at the right time, but anybody in my position would have, and should have, done the same,” a humbled Dr Zafar says.
I would want them to see that being a Muslim is a privilege and that they should reconsider if they have any negative views about Islam
His courageous act has received a lot of media attention and he is of the view that his faith has a lot to do with what he has done.

“My religion tells me to help other people, and if I was in the position to help I could not say no.”
My religion tells me to help other people, and if I was in the position to help I could not say no.
Dr Zafar hopes this would help naysayers understand what his faith is all about.

“If I want people to just have one takeaway from this, I would want them to see that being a Muslim is a privilege and that they should reconsider if they have any negative views about Islam.

The Pakistani community is also proud on Dr Zafar’s achievement.

“It certainly makes me happy that being a Pakistani I was able to help someone, but we all are Australians and it is our responsibility towards each other that we take care of our fellow community members.”
