Tina Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock on the 26th of November, 1939, in Tennessee.
Her farming family lived in the unincorporated community of Nutbush, later the subject of one of her most famous songs and a dance much-loved in Australia.
Her life changed forever when she met Ike Turner in St Louis in 1957.
It marked the start of professional success and personal turbulence.
They became not just performing partners but lovers, marrying in 1962.
But behind their hit songs and worldwide fame, there was a dark secret.
For her, the marriage was torture, with bullying and assaulting from Ike.
Eventually, she could take no more, fleeing at the age of 37 in the 1970s and giving up all financial claims to the music they made together, just so the divorce would go through quicker.
She emerged from the partnership with Ike to build a solo career of her own in her 40s.
She became a Swiss citizen, finding personal happiness again as she lived with her partner, a German record company manager 16 years her junior, Erwin Bach, on Lake Zurich.
She and Bach married in 2013.
She suffered from colon cancer and kidney failure, Bach donating one of his kidneys to her in 2017.
