The most attended festival of its kind in Serbia, and formerly the biggest in Yugoslavia, the Niš Film Festival has always attracted a lot of attention. Festival is organized in the open air amphitheater of the ancient fortress and along the river Nišava since 1966. Every summer Mayor of the Niš symbolically gives the the town keys to well-known Serbian actors.
Richard Burton and the late Elizabeth Taylor were once the guests of honour, staying at the Hotel Ambassador.
