Punjab Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal reportedly had a bleeding eye after a shoe was hurled at him while campaigning in his constituency, Lambi in Muktsar district in Punjab.
Mr Badal was addressing his constituents in Ratta Khera village when a man threw a shoe at the five-term Punjab CM. The shoe thrower was identified as 40-year-old Gurbachan Singh.
"A man identified as Gurbachan Singh, a relative of a Sikh radical leader, hurled a shoe at Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal," Muktsar SSP Dhruman H Nimbale said.
A security official guarding Badal tried to stop the shoe with his hand. "After hitting the security personnel, the shoe then touched the turban of CM," Nimbale said.
"He appeared to be upset over the sacrilege incidents which took place in Punjab," he added.
Gurbachan Singh was arrested by the police present at the spot. While being taken into custody, he accused Mr Badal of “destroying” the Sikh faith.
A few days ago, Sukhbir Singh Badal’s cavalcade was pelted with stones in his constituency of Jalalabad in Fazilka district.
Chief Minister Badal said it was a conspiracy and police will investigate the matter.
“That man is not even from this constituency, he is from Abohar district. I don’t know what the conspiracy was. Only police will investigate and unravel it,” he said.
While Mr Badal’s opponent, state Congress chief and former CM Capt Amarinder Singh condemned the incident, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Mr Badals daughter-in-law and union minister accused Aam Aadmi Party of orchestrating the incident.
“If chief minister Parkash Singh Badal told workers of our party to turn violent, AAP workers will not stay alive,” she said while addressing a gathering of party workers.
