“My wife will never be able to call anyone a brother because of what this man has done to us,” says the man who was covertly filmed along with his wife in a bathroom by Rubinder Singh in his Sydney home.

“My wife used to call him brother. What has he done! He betrayed our trust,” he told SBS Punjabi.

29-year-old Singh pleaded guilty this week to four charges of filming the victims in their Harris Park unit between December 2015 and April this year.

He was sentenced to six months in jail at Parramatta Local Court on Thursday.

Singh was arrested in June this year after secret video recordings were found on his mobile phone. Among his victims were a 7-year-old child and a 31-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man.

Having lived in Australia for only a few months, the couple, who contact SBS Punjabi to tell their story, had moved in to a shared accommodation in Harris Park in Sydney after seeing an ad Singh had posted on Gumtree last year.

"He was very nice to talk to and we had a very amiable relationship with his family," the 31-year-old male victim told SBS Punjabi.

They were unaware of the machinations of Rupinder Singh until one day when they saw an online ad of a digital clock with a spy camera.

"I was looking for CCTV cameras for my office and I saw an ad of a digital clock. A similar clock was also there in the bathroom in our house. I immediately called up my wife and asked her to check if there was a camera in it," said the victim.

He said when they checked the clock, they found a hidden camera in it with their video recordings. The camera was WiFi enabled and Singh used to stream the videos on his mobile phone.

He says his wife initially found it hard to believe that Rupinder could do this.

Singh was arrested in June after the couple reported the incident to police. Rubinder Singh was also given a two-year good-behaviour bond for possessing child pornography that was found after police seized his phone. Singh also pleaded guilty to this charge.

The victim says they had to face enormous difficulties after his arrest.

“We were asked to vacate the home overnight. With our bond money still with him, we had nowhere to go. I stayed at one place, my wife stayed at another."

“Most of what we earn goes in paying my wife’s university fee. And to pay for another bond and advance rent for another house when the other bond is still not refunded, it was really difficult,” he said.

“We are happy that he has been put behind bars but we wanted him jailed for a longer time,” he said.
