Junior/Masters/Bench Press Nationals and The Melbourne Open Powerlifting competitions were held simultaneously from 4th – 6th August 2017 at Hawthorn, Melbourne.
Gurbakhshsis Singh won a gold and a bronze medal at this three-day national championship, which was attended by over 300 weightlifters from across the nation.
“I am very pleased to see this happen. My gold medal is in 83Kg Bench Press category,” said Mr Singh in an interview with SBS Punjabi.
“This is my first gold at the national level. It was an open competition, which was attended by Australia’s top powerlifters.”
“I have a passion for powerlifting. I am perusing powerlifting from 2013 but I am relatively new to the professional competitions.”Mr Singh told SBS that he moved to Australia in 2009 from Patran, Patiala in Punjab.

“As a young migrant, I find it very hard to find time to do gym sessions. But with motivation from my coach Mr Harry and my family, I was able to achieve this milestone,” said Mr Singh.
“There is no substitute to hard work. I finish my work at around 10PM and then go straight to gym for a practise session.”
“At times, it’s hard to manage time but this the only way to climb the ladder.”
“I wish to represent Australia at international level. It will definitely give me a sense of pride and achievement, if it happens.”
