Punjabi boy Gurpreet Rai wins Men’s Decathlon Branze Medal in Melbourne

24 year old Gurpreet Rai from Epping has won a Bronze medal in Men’s Decathlon Open category of Victorian Multi Track and Field Championship 2016, held on 20th and 21st of February at Tom Kelly Athletics Track, Doncaster.

Decathlon is a combined game of ten track and field events that are held over two days.

Day one comprises of 100 meters race, shot put, high jump, 400 meters and long jump.

Day two has 110 meters, pole vault, Javelin throw, discus throw and 1500 meters.

Points and given on the bases of performance and points from all events are combined to delayer the winners. Gurpreet scored a total of 6387 points.
Gurpreet holds a degree in accounts from LaTrobe university and has recently enrolled in Maters in Teaching at RMIT university. In his conversation with SBS, he said he loves athletics and would one day like to coach school students.

Gurpreet’s parents migrated to Australia from Punjab more than two decades ago. He is one of four siblings and his sister has also represented Australia in various international events.  Hi mother Paramjeet Rai said, she was pround of all of them. Talking about Gurpreet, Ms paramjeet said that he had asthma when he was young buthe overcame the condition to pursue what he loved.  

In his message to the younger generation and their parents, Gurpreet said parents should encourage their kids to not only excel in studies but also in sports.
