Many people who have parents living overseas might want to bring them to Australia either temporarily or permanently.

Migration expert, Suraj Handa told SBS Punjabi that there are six main subclasses of parent visa that fall in contributory, non-contributory and visitor visa categories.

“If you compare it with last few years, it has become more streamlined but it will come at a higher cost,” said Mr Handa.
There are several parent visas available in Australia, but they are either expensive or there’s a very long wait time.

“Many young families may not be able to support their parents in contributory category. It has become way too expensive to afford,” says Mr Handa.

“But at the same time, everyone is excited about the new temporary visa that might be in place sometime soon. The migrant parents who don’t pass the balance of family test might be able to avail this visa option.”

“The applicants will be allowed to stay in Australia for up to ten years but the cost could go up to $20 000. This amount is in addition to the private health insurance.”

The visa wouldn’t be a pathway to residency and the parents would have to leave Australia after the ten years is up.

This new temporary sponsored parent visa still needs to be voted in. If it passes in Parliament, it could be implemented by the end of the year.
