Immigration authorities in New Zealand have detained one of the 12 Indian students who have been served deportation notices.
The Indian students took refuge in a church in Auckland after their appeal for revoking their deportation was turned down by the Immigration Minister.
This student was detained from his home on Tuesday morning.
A flatmate said more than eight immigration officers arrived at their flat and asked them to show their passports.
Reverend Clay Nelson of the Unitarian Church where 9 nine Indian students are still taking sanctuary confirmed the detention.
Alastair McClymont-the lawyer who is representing these students said the detained student had been brought to Auckland Central police station and he is likely to be put on a plane to India on Friday.
He said the immigration officers told him that they were going to detain two students in Christchurch as well.
Mr McClymont said while the students are being deported, the immigration had taken no action against the agents and others involved who continue to operate.
"We know that Immigration NZ has taken no action against the agents who have taken all the money.
"They don't seem to have taken any action against the Immigration officers who allowed these people to come here without interviews," he said.
“Schools are making millions from this so they are scurrying for cover.. students are just dollar signs who walk in the door,” quoted him as saying.
Immigration NZ is expected to gather other students on Wednesday and detain them before putting them on a plane to India.
