An Indian-origin wrestler has won a bronze medal at the 13th commonwealth wrestling championships held in Johannesburg, South Africa between December 15 and December 17, 2017.
Sandhu who is also Australia’s national wrestling champion clinched bronze in 50 Kg category.
Sandhu told that she is looking forward to represent Australia at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018).
“The Johannesburg championship was an amazing learning experience. The international competition helps you gain confidence,” she said.
“I played four matches - two wins and two losses. I won my matches against Singapore and South Africa but lost both to Indian wrestlers.
“This participation will definitely help me prepare for the upcoming international competitions.
“I am very hopeful for my selection to the wrestling contingent for GC18.
Sandhu won a Gold Medal in 48 Kg wrestling division in this year’s Australian National Championships held in Sydney.
The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) will be the largest sporting event Australia will see this decade and the biggest sporting spectacular the Gold Coast has ever seen.
On 4 April 2018, over 6,600 athletes and team officials from 70 nations and territories will converge on the Gold Coast for an 11-day sporting and cultural event.
According to the organisers, a spectacle of 18 sports and 7 para-sports will be contested and broadcast to a cumulative global audience of 1.5 billion.
Rupinder Kaur Sandhu represented Australia in the 2014 Commonwealth Games held at Glasgow, Scotland.
She migrated to Australia ten years ago from Punjab, India.
