An Indian migrant killed in a car crash in Shepparton in Victoria earlier this month was cremated on Tuesday in his native village in India.
29-year-old Gurwinder Singh Dhillon was critically injured after he lost control of his vehicle and it crashed into a paddock fence along the road. A wooden fence post went through the cabin of his utility truck that caused serious injuries to his upper body.
The ambulance paramedics arrived at the scene and he was later flown to Melbourne by an air ambulance where he succumbed to his injuries two days later.
“It’s such a terrible loss for his family. He was such a lively person, very religious and always willing to help other, no matter what his personal circumstances,” Mr Dhillon’s friend Daler Singh Dhanoa who travelled to India for repatriating his friend’s mortal remains.
Mr Dhillon arrived in Australia in July 2009 as an international student. He was currently on a sponsored skilled visa as a motor mechanic in Shepparton. He was on job when the accident occurred.
His friends organised a prayer meeting in Melbourne’s Preston last week that was attended by nearly 100 people, including his friends and members of the community. They are also pooling money to help his parents who live in a village in Moga district of Punjab.
“He faced a lot of hardships during the recent years in Australia and was just beginning to settle down a bit with a new job,” Mr Dhanoa said.
“His family is devastated at this cruel turn of fate. His mother has been completely inconsolable.
“She was preparing for his marriage in October this year and now the family is dealing with this tragedy,” he added.
