An Indian man working as a chef in New Zealand has died after falling sick in the cold weather.

According to , 20-year-old Gurvinder Singh had come to New Zealand in 2015 to study cookery and make a life for himself in NZ. He studied at the Institute of Applied Learning School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts in Henderson and finished his course in March this year.

After finishing his course, he was on an open job search visa and started working as a chef in Wellington.

However, he had recently returned to Auckland to take up another job after a brief break due to injury.

It has been reported that he fell ill after a recent polar blast in New Zealand and was admitted to hospital earlier this week. At that time, the Indian High Commission had liaised with the New Zealand High Commission to grant urgent visa to his father to travel to New Zealand to visit his sick son.

Gurvinder Singh, who was popularly known as Garry Gill passed away on Wednesday 19th July 2017.

Gurvinder’s former classmate remembered him as “Cheerful and full of life”.

The Indian High Commission is now taking urgent action to arrange for his funeral service and repatriation of the body back to India.
