A woman accused of duping multiple international students of tens of thousands of dollars on the pretext of getting them permanent residency and work visas in Australia was arrested while trying to depart to India.
Shamna Singh allegedly presented herself as a registered migration agent before her business Australian Immigration Legal Support Centre in Melbourne was deregistered in April 2017.
SBS Punjabi is aware of at least two international students who complained to the police against Ms Singh.
Victoria Police confirmed she was arrested on 29 January and has been charged with obtaining property by deception, negligently dealing with proceeds of crime, falsely representing herself as a registered migration agent and charging fees for migration representations.
Ms Singh was given bail to appear at Melbourne Magistrate’s Court on 17 April.
Chathurika Dissanayaka, a 39-year-old Sri Lankan national, filed a police complaint against Ms Singh in September 2017. Ms Dissanayaka, a former international student in Australia, has since returned to her home country.
