The Hindu community in Australia and overseas had expressed their anger at the Hindu deity Ganesha being featured in a video ad to promote the consumption of lamb meat.
Meat and Livestock Australia’s latest ad campaign released on Monday last week, showed the Ganesha sitting among others gods and goddesses and prophets of different faiths coming together over lamb at a modern day spring barbecue.
While Meat and Livestock Australia said that the ad positions Lamb as the meat people can eat regardless of their religious beliefs, background or dietary requirements, many people feel it has offended their cultural and religious sensitivities and have condemned it calling the ad “irresponsible” and an “assault” on the diverse cultures in Australia. This issue was taken up by the Indian Australian community and the Indian government has also launched a diplomatic protest over the ad.

Now a Liberal MP, Mr Julian Leeser has condemned the ad in parliament and has asked for the ad to be withdrawn immediately.
Speaking in Parliament, he said that this ad has put Australia’s relationship with India at risk by mocking one of their main deities and that Australia has taken their sense of humour too far.
