After three years away, the Mumathumburru people can finally return to their homes thanks to the installation of a solar-powered, renewable energy source.

Many remote communities are facing energy crises: the cost of electricity is higher than in metropolitan areas, the supply is often unreliable and no electricity can mean no water.

The struggle to get working and reliable electricity in their homes forced the people from Mumathumburru, The Western Island in Northern Territory’s Gulf of Carpentaria, to move out of their homes in 2021.

However, thanks to the successful installation of a solar-powered, renewable energy system for Mumathumburru by Power to Country, they are finally able to return .

NITV Radio spoke to Genevieve Grieves, a Worimi woman, Co-founder of GARUWA, First Nations storytelling agency, and supervising director of the short film , about the challenges the people from Mumathumburru were facing.

Genevieve discusses the story of Mumathumburru, Power to Country and their project and also about clean energy solutions and that in these times when we need to be moving away from fossil fuels, how solar power may be the answer.
