New South Wales Police haven't released the identity of the missing person but media reports say the man was a Nepali student who was with his friends at the time of the incident.
According to the Police, emergency services were called to the "Figure Eight Pools" at Royal National Park after reports two men had been swept into the water around 2 pm on Monday.
Police say the 22-year-old was "seen to disappear underwater" and did not resurface. Another person aged in his 20, who had also been swept off the rocks was able to climb back safely with minor lacerations that was treated by NSW Paramedics.
"The pair were with three other people at the time of the incident but they were not injured", says Chief inspector Darren Brown from Wollongong Police district.
EXTREME RISK
NSW Parks and Wildlife Service had set the wave risk forecast to "extreme" today. It had advised visitors not to visit Figure Eight Pools "because it's underwater" and that "waves are washing over the whole rock shelf."
The service also had this warning on its website, "If you’re in the rock pools you’ll be trapped and thrown against the rocks, before being washed out of the pools and dragged across the rock shelf."
NSW Police have urged visitors to the Royal National Park to check weather conditions and tide times before heading out.
FOURTH INCIDENT THIS SUMMER
A Nepali student who went missing from Murray River at the NSW city of Albury last month is still reported missing.
21-year-old Bigul Pandit went missing from the banks of the Murray River at Noreuil Park on January 9 when playing with his friends.
In a separate incident on January 27 another Nepali man in his twenties lost his life while swimming at Bents Basin near Wallacia in New South Wales.
Another Nepali, Nischal Ghimire, who was also in his twenties and had been living in Adelaide, also lost his life by drowning in December last year.
