Ten years have passed since IS attacked Sinjar in northern Iraq, killing and enslaving thousands of Yazidis. Many survivors are still in the dark about what became of their loved ones.

Nihad Barakat remembers that challenging day which changed her life and many Yazidis' lives.

It was a day that cannot be forgotten as members of her family are still missing.

Twenty-eight members of her family were captured by IS — two brothers, two cousins and a second cousin are still missing.

Many Yazidis have been resettled by the Australian government, but some community members have been waiting to be reunited with their loved ones for more than five years.

"We thank and appreciate the Australian government for their support and resettling Yazidis here, (and) we wish the government (would) bring more Yazidis," Barakat told SBS Kurdish.
