A number of protests colored World Refugee Day on 20 June 2023 in some cities in Indonesia, including Palembang, Medan, Makassar, Batam and Aceh.
The refugees have been in shelters in those cities for several years.
As refugees they are not allowed to work and have no identity. To live, they are completely dependent on the help of international organisations.
To understand how refugees are doing and why they often hold protests, this interview is with Nur Alom, a Rohingya refugee from Myanmar who fled his war-torn village in 2013.
Since then he moved from Thailand, Malaysia and now in Medan. He also briefly separated from his wife and children.
From him we will be able to understand how their psychological condition, which is wracked by many problems. Unable to work, have dependent children and wives, difficulty in school and access to other services, but also cannot be moved to a destination country, such as Australia or America.
